PART 5 It All Started In Virginia Henry Childers of Virginia and Kentucky My quest to prove the parentage of Henry Childers of Amherst County, Virginia has failed so far. I have had lots of clues, blind alleys pursued and speculation, but the positive proof has not found. It has been possible to connect some family ties i.e., the identity of Henry's associates and children but the relationship of Henry to his Peers, the other adults of Amherst County, is still unknown. None of Henry's children remained in Amherst County after l788. They were in Greenbrier County, Virginia or Kentucky after 1788, and all were in Kentucky by 1810. Joseph Childers of Virginia It is noteworthy that some of the descendants of Joseph Childers of Amherst County were "fellow travelers" of Henry Childers and his descendants, being found in Greenbrier County in the 1780's, Pendleton County in the 1800's, in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana in the 1850's and Oregon in the 1880's. This indicates a close kinship. Joseph Childers owned land in Amherst County in 1760. His wife was Mary Paris who died 1829 Grant County, KY. Joseph died in Kanawha County, VA where on 12 December 1809 his son Reuben was the executor. Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph and Mary, married Benjamin Sandidge 28 October 1783 in Amherst County. Joseph Childers, Jr. had two wives, and died in 1810 in Amherst County. He married Nancy Ballinger 23 January 1806. She died about three years later, and Joseph married again 12 March 1809 to Polly Gilliam. Joseph Jr. had two sons. Leonard H. was married in Amherst County 8 September 1828 to Belinda Catherine Taliaferro. Henry F. attended medical college at the University of Virginia and graduated in 1827. He went to Pendleton, then to Boone County, KY, where he died in 1845. He married Eliza Ann Cary, 10 March 1830 in Bourbon County, KY. She died after 1885. Their son, Thomas Jefferson Childers, was born 31 January 1836 in Boone Co., and served as a First Lieutenant in the Confederate Army. He married 7 February 1867 to Mary E. Bristow of Kenton County, KY, who was daughter of Reuben and Satira (Stevens) Bristow. Other children of Henry F. B. and Eliza Ann were Lewis L., Satira B., Thomas K. who was deceased before 1885, and Henry F. Reuben, son of Joseph Sr. and Mary, married Margaret Hudson, 5 October 1785. He went to Greenbrier County, VA (now in WV) and then to Pendleton/Grant County, KY. It is known that he had a son Joseph born circa 1793, who also moved to KY and died in Decatur County, IN 4 February 1854. He married 19 January 1815 in Greenbrier Co., to Mary, or Polly, Hix. She was born 1794 in VA and died 1880 in Putnam Co., MO. Oldest child of Joseph and Polly was Benjamin, born 1816. His wife was Sarah, surname unknown. Second child of Joseph and Polly was Richard, who, along with his younger brother William Meredith, went to Putnam Co., MO and will be found in the Missouri segment. Third child of Joseph and Polly was Mary Ann, born 1820. Amanda was born 1826 in KY and married John Ogle, a shoemaker who was born 1822 in IN or TN. Known children are John Sinclair born 1844, James born 1846, and William A. born 1848. Joseph Jr., son of Joseph and Polly, was born circa 1826 in KY, and was a boot and shoemaker. His wife, Mary, was born 1830 in IN. They lived in Decatur Co., IN. Their known children are: Samuel O. born 1849, George C. born 1854, and William M. born 1856. Twins, Reuben 0. and Sarah Elizabeth, were born to Joseph and Polly 1833 in Decatur Co., IN. Sarah Elizabeth married Martillis William Bush 25 March 1851 in Decatur Co. Youngest child of Joseph and Polly was Elisa born 1834. Reuben and Margaret had a son Benjamin who resided in Franklin County, IN. His wife's name is not known. His son, Meredith, born 1813, married 1 February 1833 in Decatur Co., IN to Elizabeth Anthony. They moved to dark Co., MO. Known children are Henry born 1837, a son born 1840 whose name was illegible on the census record, Noah born 1843, and Sarah born 1847, all born in IN. Charles was born in KY 1852, and Missouri was born 1857 in Dark Co. Other children of Benjamin Childers of Franklin Co., IN were Reuben born 1815, John born 1820, Joseph born 1825, Benjamin born 1827, Martha born 1830 and Harrison born 1835. Other children of Reuben and Margaret (Hudson) Childers were Lucinda born 1799, married 20 April 1815 Pendleton Co., KY to Thomas Hix; Reuben who married Mary/Polly Huffman; Joshua who married Polly Harmon; and James born circa 1805. Reuben and Joshua have been treated in the Kentucky segment. Fourth child of Joseph and Mary Childers of Amherst County was Shadrach, who married Julia Ward in Jackson County, Ohio. Known children are Mary who married Moses Nelson 1831, Lucy who married Josiah Creameana 23 July 1835, Nancy who married Adam Corn 16 November 1837, Caroline who married Samuel Nelson 2 November 1839, and Shadrach Jr. who married Rebecca Carrick 23 July 1835. Children of Shadrach Jr. were James W. born 1836, Elizabeth born 1837, William A. born 1842, and Samuel born 1847. Major, fifth son of Joseph and Mary is included in the Kentucky segment of this family tree. Nancy Ann, daughter of Joseph and Mary, married 10 July 1788 in Amherst Co. to James Coleman. Jesse married Anne Sandidge in Amherst Co. 13 October 1793. Judith, youngest child of Joseph and Mary, married Samuel Coleman 26 February 1794 in Amherst Co. Abraham Childers of Roundabout Swamp If it has been impossible to prove who is Henry Childers who married Susannah Goolsby, it has bean possible- to prove who he is not. A Henry born after 1740 is probably too you-ns to be the parent of Goolsbury, the Revolutionary War veteran. A Henry born before 1700 is unlikely to be the parent of sons born 1732 and 1785. So let us look at the known Henry Childers born in Virginia between 1700 and 1740. The Virginia Genealogist, a magazine edited by Frederick Dorman, published an article entitled British Mercantile Claims after the Revolution, and the list included a Henry Childers who died without an estate during the war. I have been unable to identify this Henry, except to know that he obviously did not go to Kentucky in 1790 and remain to 1809. Henry Childers, son of Henry and Lucretia (Jonas) Childers was born circa 1714 and died 1760 Lunenburg County, Virginia. His wife was Mary Earner who survived him. They had a son Henry named in his father's will. The son Henry resided in that part of Lunenburg County that became Charlotte County in 1762. He remained there until 7 April 1777 when a land deed states he is a resident of Bedford County., VA. Henry Childers signed his name to this deed. From 1782 until 1790 or later Henry Childers is on the tax list of Bedford County. According to the 1737 Virginia tax lists published by Nellie Schreiner-Yantis, there were two Henry Childers in Virginia that year, one in Bedford County and one in Greenbrier County. Since Henry who married Susannah Goolsby was in Greenbrier County, it is very unlikely that he was the same man who paid -taxes in Bedford County. The Edward Pleasants Valentine Papers edited by Torrence, tells of Abraham Childers who owned land on Roundabout Swamp, which was mortgaged, to Pleasants And Son Merchants when Abraham died in 1757 in Henrico County, Virginia. Abraham's sons Abraham, Henry and Frederick in 1763 sold the land inherited from their father to pay the father's debt. The father has been identified as the son of Abraham and Hester (Pledge) Cannon Childers. His wife was Mary, whom he had married by 1729. Mary's surname is unknown. Abraham and Mary's son Abraham died in Henrico County 1773 and the son Frederick died there in 1785. Nothing has been found to tell what happened to the son Henry. Could he be the Henry Childers that married Susannah Goolsby? Henry and Abraham, both, when selling their land to Pleasants And Son, Merchants in 1763 made a mark, not signed, their deeds. Henry and Susannah when selling their land in Amherst County in 1765 both made a mark, not signed, their deed. Is it significant that Abraham, the father died in 1757 and in 1760 Henry bought land in Amherst County? For Henry and Susannah to have moved to Amherst County is not illogical; her father and brother lived there and were landowners. The probable marriage date of Abraham and Mary Childers and the probable birth date of Henry Childers are two or three years apart. Circa 1755 Henry married and struck out on his own, going into Albermarle County (where the Goolsbys were) and then to Amherst County when it was formed in 1761. While he was not at Roundabout Swamp, he was not so far away that he could not travel there to help his brothers when the father died in debt. Are these Henrys, indeed, the same man?
